Criminal Procedural Rules Committee
The Criminal Procedural Rules Committee is an advisory arm to the Supreme Court.
It assists the court in achieving its constitutional mandate to prescribe general rules governing criminal practice and procedure throughout Pennsylvania. The committee also monitors all local criminal rules as required by Pennsylvania Rule of Criminal Procedure 105 and periodically publishes reports explaining the committee's proposals for new rules and rule amendments.
Committee appointments are for three years with possible reappointment for a second three-year term. In special circumstances the Supreme Court may extend or reduce the term of an appointment. Committee members are appointed by the Supreme Court and are knowledgeable about the Pennsylvania Rules of Criminal Procedure and are experienced in state criminal practice in Pennsylvania. The Criminal Procedural Rules Committee has 13 voting members, of which four are reserved seats for the Philadelphia and Allegheny County district attorneys, the attorney general of Pennsylvania and for a magisterial district judge. There is also one ex-officio member who is identified by, and is a member of, the Pennsylvania Association of Court Management.
