Gov. Thomas Corbett has appointed Superior Court President Judge Correale F. Stevens to the vacancy on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Judge Stevens would begin serving as a justice if confirmed by a two-thirds majority of the Pennsylvania Senate. He would continue serving on the state’s highest court until Pennsylvania voters choose someone in the Nov. 2015 general election to serve in the seat for a full 10-year term.

Elected to the post of president judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania in November 2010, Judge Stevens served as a trial judge on the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas for seven years. He was first elected to Superior Court in 1997 and retained by voters in 2007 for an additional 10-year term.

Judge Stevens also was elected to four consecutive terms in the state House of Representatives and has served as Luzerne Court district attorney. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and the Dickinson School of Law. He would replace former Justice Jane Orie Melvin, who resigned May 1 following her conviction on public corruption charges.
