Stevens Sworn into Office as Supreme Court Justice

Former Superior Court President Judge Correale F. Stevens became the newest member of Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court Tuesday during a swearing-in ceremony in his native Luzerne County.

Jurists from the federal, state and county levels attended the proceedings at the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre. 

“We on the court expect and know he will do a good job on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania,” Chief Justice of Pennsylvania Ronald D. Castille said.

Justice Stevens, who had served on the Superior Court since 1997, was nominated by Gov. Tom Corbett to the vacancy in June and won unanimous Senate confirmation two weeks later.  Justice Stevens also had served as a member of the state House, a trial judge and the district attorney in Luzerne County.

Justice Stevens previously served on the Superior Court with Justices Thomas Saylor, J. Michael Eakin, Seamus McCaffery and Debra Todd.

Justice Stevens replaces former Justice Joan Orie Melvin who resigned in May.
