Superior Court to Hold Special Session in Two Luzerne County Locations

News Article

August 29, 2013

The Pennsylvania Superior Court has decided to move three cases previously set for a special session at Dallas High School in Luzerne County to the county courthouse in Wilkes-Barre.

Significant media and public interest prompted the move in the following cases: Commonwealth v. Gerald Sandusky; Commonwealth v. Michael Veon and Commonwealth v. Hernan Torres. The appeals cases are scheduled to be heard by a three-judge panel at 3 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Luzerne County Courthouse.

“The court’s purpose in holding sessions in community and educational settings is to make the work of the judiciary more readily accessible to the citizenry and to provide a learning experience to students and the general public alike,” said Superior Court Judge Jack A. Panella, who is presiding over the panel. “To avoid possible disruption of those goals it is believed prudent to reschedule these cases to the county courthouse.”

The remaining previously scheduled cases will be heard beginning at 10 a.m. at the high school as originally planned. A special ceremony honoring area veterans will take place at 9 a.m. immediately prior to the argument schedule. A second day of arguments on Sept. 18 is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the high school.

Judges Sallie Updyke Mundy and William H. Platt will join Judge Panella in hearing the cases.
