Voters Give Their Approval to Appellate Court Jurists

News Article

November 05, 2013

Pennsylvania voters have chosen to retain four appellate court jurists.

Chief Justice of Pennsylvania Ronald D. Castille and Justice Max Baer were given new 10-year terms on the state’s highest court. Superior Court Judges Susan Gantman and Jack Panella also were approved for new terms on the intermediate appellate-level court.

After serving initial 10-year terms, jurists in Pennsylvania at the appellate and trial court levels may seek re-election through “retention elections” in which they are not affiliated with any political party.

Retention is a nonpolitical method of re-electing Pennsylvania judges and is intended to be politically neutral as it does not require judges to engage in campaigning against other candidates.
