Selecting jurors in a Pennsylvania trial

News Article

December 01, 2016

The right to trial by jury in criminal cases, and some civil cases, is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and Pennsylvania state law. But how many Pennsylvanians serve as jurors in a given year?

In 2015, 1,238,807 Pennsylvanians received a juror summons, and of those, 237,749 were asked to report for service. 81 percent of those who reported for service were sent through the jury selection process and 3.8 percent of those were ultimately empaneled in a jury. The infographic below highlights jury data for 2015. Reporters are encouraged to use the full graphic or parts of the graphic by downloading a high-resolution version.
