Superior Court to Hold Educational Program for Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Chambers of Commerce

The Superior Court of Pennsylvania will hold an educational program for the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Chambers of Commerce on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018.

The program will run from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lackawanna College’s Scranton Campus, 501 Vine Street, Scranton.

Superior Court Judge Jack Panella and Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Consultant Bill Schoen will lead the educational program. The event is free and open to the public.

As part of the event, Superior Court Judges Mary Murray, Maria McLaughlin and Deborah Kunselman will discuss how business-related cases flow through the state court system, as well as how Commerce Court Divisions of both the trial courts in Philadelphia and Allegheny County operate.

A question and answer session will follow the program, moderated by Superior Court Judge Carolyn Nichols.

The Superior Court was created in 1895 to assist the Supreme Court in disposing of a burgeoning number of appeals in the commonwealth. The court exercises general statewide jurisdiction over appeals from decisions of the state trial courts with the exception of death penalty appeals and cases brought against the commonwealth and its political subdivisions, such as school districts and municipalities.

One of the busiest appellate courts in the nation, the Superior Court dockets hundreds of thousands of filings per year and decides more than 8,000 civil, criminal, domestic relations, and orphans’ court cases.
