The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has released its 2024 Annual Report, offering a comprehensive overview of the Court’s work over the past year. The report details activity across the Court’s various dockets and highlights a notable increase in the number of matters resolved compared to the previous year.

“Our annual report is more than a record of numbers – it is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to justice, transparency and service to the people of Pennsylvania,” said Chief Justice Debra Todd. “The increase in case dispositions across our dockets demonstrates the dedication of our Court to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the timely administration of justice.

“This report highlights the broad scope and impact of the Court’s work and underscores its essential role in safeguarding the constitutional rights of all Pennsylvanians.” The annual report also serves as a valuable resource for understanding the volume and complexity of matters handled by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in administering justice across the Commonwealth.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • Appeal Docket: In 2024, the Court disposed of 202 direct appeals and granted allocaturs, marking an increase from 153 in 2023 – an increase of approximately 32%.
  • Allocatur Docket (Discretionary Review): A total of 1,457 petitions were disposed of, compared to 1,315 in 2023 – a 10.8% increase.
  • Miscellaneous Docket: The Court addressed 351 matters under its original jurisdiction (including King’s Bench and extraordinary jurisdiction petitions), up from 281 in the previous year – a 24.9% increase.
  • Ancillary Filings: 2,417 procedural filings (such as motions for extensions and other relief) were resolved in 2024, marking a 31% rise from 1,844 in 2023.
  • Disciplinary Docket: The report also includes a summary of disciplinary matters adjudicated by the Court in its oversight of attorney conduct and professional responsibility.

The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania is the Commonwealth’s highest court and the oldest appellate court in the nation. The Judiciary Act of 1722 created the Supreme Court as a permanent body with authority over both appeals and trials, although its roots go back to William Penn’s Provincial Court established in 1684.

The Court has full administrative authority over all aspects of Pennsylvania’s judicial system and may also hear cases involving issues of immediate public importance arising in any court in the Commonwealth.
