Superior Court to Hold Special Session in Erie County

The Pennsylvania Superior Court will hold a special session on Tues., Aug. 4 and Wed., Aug. 5 at the Erie County Courthouse in Courtroom H, providing local students, educators and members of the public with an opportunity to observe the appellate court in action and learn more about the state’s judicial system.

Proceedings will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday and 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, with a three-judge panel comprised of President Judge Emeritus Jack A. Panella, Judge Megan McCarthy King, and Judge Timika Lane will hear oral arguments in pending appeals.

During oral arguments, attorneys present legal arguments to the panel, which reviews the record from the trial court and considers whether the law was applied correctly.

The Superior Court is one of the Commonwealth's two intermediate appellate courts and hears appeals involving criminal and most civil cases from the Courts of Common Pleas, as well as appeals from certain state agencies. Created in 1895, the Court's decisions help ensure the consistent application of Pennsylvania law across the Commonwealth. As one of the busiest appellate courts in the nation, the Superior Court annually decides more than 6,700 appeals involving civil, criminal, domestic relations and orphans’ court claims.

Typically, the Court hears arguments in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but occasionally holds special sessions in other counties.
