Superior Court to Hold Three Days of Special Sessions in Delaware County

The Superior Court of Pennsylvania is bringing its proceedings to Delaware County this week, where they are hearing oral arguments on Tues., Sept. 15, through Thurs., Sept. 17, beginning each day at 9:30 a.m.

The Tuesday session will be held at 1724 Chester Courthouse and livestreamed on the PA Courts YouTube channel, while the Wednesday and Thursday sessions will take place at the Delaware County Courthouse in Courtroom No. 1.

Superior Court President Judge Anne E. Lazarus, Judge Jill Beck (presiding) and Judge Brandon Neuman will sit on the panel. For students studying civics, government or law, the special sessions offer a rare opportunity to observe this process firsthand and see how Pennsylvania's appellate courts work beyond the classroom. Members of the public are also welcome to attend and gain a better understanding of how appeals can shape the outcome of cases.

The Superior Court is one of the Commonwealth's two intermediate appellate courts and hears appeals involving criminal and most civil cases from the Courts of Common Pleas, as well as appeals from certain state agencies. Created in 1895, the Court's decisions help ensure the consistent application of Pennsylvania law across the Commonwealth. As one of the busiest appellate courts in the nation, the Superior Court annually decides more than 6,700 appeals involving civil, criminal, domestic relations and orphans’ court claims.

Typically, the Court hears arguments in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but occasionally holds special sessions in other counties.

1724 Chester Courthouse

For more than 300 years, the 1724 Chester Courthouse has stood as a witness to Pennsylvania’s evolving system of justice. Built in 1724, the courthouse served as the Chester County Courthouse and later became part of Delaware County following the county’s creation in 1789. The historic building is also the oldest meeting place of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania still standing. The courthouse celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2024, as Pennsylvania marks the nation’s 250th anniversary.
