Pennsylvania Courts Launch “Protection Starts with Knowing” Social Campaign for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, the PA Courts have launched a new social media campaign to help raise awareness about Protection from Abuse (PFA) orders and the resources available through the courts.

The campaign, “Protection starts with knowing,” shares information designed to help Pennsylvanians better understand PFA orders, what protections they may provide, who can request a PFA, how safety planning and support services can help to protect victim survivors, and ways the courts can help.

“Understanding the resources available is an important first step for individuals who may be experiencing abuse or seeking protection for themselves or their families,” said Court Administrator of Pennsylvania Andrea Tuominen. “Through this campaign, we are making information about PFA orders and court resources more accessible, so people know where to turn for help.”

Campaign messages will highlight that a PFA order may provide protection such as:

  • Requiring an alleged abuser to have no contact with the person seeking protection
  • Removing an alleged abuser from a home
  • Addressing custody-related matters
  • Providing other protections, including provisions related to pets in appropriate circumstances

The campaign will appear across the PA Courts’ social media channels throughout October. Pennsylvanians are encouraged to follow and share the campaign’s messages to help increase awareness of available protections and resources.

A PFA order is a civil court order intended to provide protection from abuse. More information about filing for a PFA or navigating the court process is available on the PA Courts’ website.
