PHILADELPHIA, December 3, 2007 - Chief Justice of Pennsylvania Ralph J. Cappy has been named the recipient of the Philadelphia Bar Association's top award for distinguished service. Jane Leslie Dalton, the chancellor of the bar association, is scheduled to present the Bar Medal to Chief Justice Cappy tomorrow, December 4, at the organization's annual meeting and luncheon at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia. In a letter informing Cappy of the award, Dalton wrote: "The Bar Medal is presented at the discretion of the Chancellor in recognition of extraordinary service. It is reserved only for the highest accomplishments and most impressive achievements… "You energetically and effectively unified and modernized the judicial system in the Commonwealth, ensuring access to justice for thousands of Pennsylvanians. Because of your exceptional leadership, the Pennsylvania courts are poised for even more enhancements in the years to come." Chief Justice Cappy, who will retire on January 6 after 18 years on the Supreme Court, said he was honored to receive the award and that he would accept it "not only in my own behalf, but in behalf of all the members of my court who have worked with me over the past five years to improve the administration of justice in Pennsylvania."
