HARRISBURG, February 24, 2006 — The Superior Court of Pennsylvania today announced the appointment of Karen Reid Bramblett, Esq., as its prothonotary. Bramblett is the first woman to hold this position in the Superior Court. She succeeds David A. Szewczak, Esq., who became executive administrator of the Superior Court. Bramblett began her legal career in the Central Legal Staff of the Superior Court, where she served five years as a supervising attorney. She returns to the court after working two years for a nonprofit organization in Rome, Italy, followed by more than 19 years as a litigator in Philadelphia. Bramblett is a cum laude honor graduate of the University of Georgia, and 1979 magna cum laude graduate of Temple University (now Beasley) School of Law in Philadelphia, where she also served as an adjunct professor of legal writing for five years during her litigation career. “I am committed to continuing the excellence of the office of Prothonotary in ensuring the efficient filing and timely listing of cases before the court,” Bramblett said. “I am confident that my experience both with the court and in the private sector will be of benefit to the court as it faces the challenge of an increasing number of appeals.” One of two intermediate courts in Pennsylvania, the 15-member Superior Court is also one of the busiest appellate courts in the United States with almost 8,000 new appeals and 220 decisions per judge in 2005. The Superior Court hears criminal, family and civil appeals from Pennsylvania’s 60 Courts of Common Pleas.
