Courts are at the very foundation of the American legal system. Two types of cases are taken to court: civil (disagreements about people’s rights and duties toward one another) and criminal (brought by the government against people accused of committing crimes).
 
The “set and cast of characters” in a courtroom can seem confusing to someone who hasn’t experienced the justice system firsthand.
