News Article

March 15, 2016

Justice J. Michael Eakin submitted his letter of retirement from the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania after 14 years of service on the state’s high court, effective at the close of business today (March 15).

The Mechanicsburg native and former Cumberland County District Attorney had been on the state’s high court since 2001, after having served six years on the Superior Court. His stepping down from the bench leaves the court with six justices until a successor is appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf and confirmed by the state Senate.

In 1995 Justice Eakin was elected a judge on the Superior Court where he served until 2001 when he was elected to the Supreme Court. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws from Widener University in 2005.
