Superior Court to Hold Special Session at Temple University

News Article

October 04, 2017

The Superior Court of Pennsylvania will hold a special session at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 on the 7th floor of Alter Hall on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia.

The session is co-hosted by the Beasley School of Law and the Fox School of Business, which is commemorating its 100th anniversary in 2018. Oral arguments will be preceded by remarks in honor of the late James E. Beasley, Esq., for whom the Beasley School of Law is named.

The Superior Court normally hears arguments on appeals in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, but occasionally visits other locations for special sessions to better acquaint Pennsylvanians with how matters before state courts are considered and resolved.

In providing a window on the work of the court, the special session offers an opportunity for area students, as well as members of the public in Philadelphia and neighboring counties, to learn about the service of the judiciary to all Pennsylvanians.

Serving on this special session panel will be Superior Court Judges Paula Francisco Ott, Victor P. Stabile, and President Judge Emeritus and former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Correale Stevens. Judge Ott maintains chambers in Chester County, Judge Stabile in Dauphin County, and President Judge Emeritus Stevens in Luzerne County.

The Superior Court was created in 1895 to assist the Supreme Court in disposing of a burgeoning number of appeals in the Commonwealth. The court exercises general statewide jurisdiction over appeals from decisions of the state trial courts with the exception of death penalty appeals (which are heard by the Supreme Court) and cases brought against the Commonwealth and its political subdivisions, such as school districts and municipalities (which are heard by the Commonwealth Court).

Superior Court is one of the busiest appellate courts in the nation, docketing hundreds of thousands of filings per year and deciding more than 8,000 civil, criminal, domestic relations, and orphans’ court cases.
