Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee
In 2024, the Supreme Court established the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee ("Committee") to monitor the development of artificial intelligence (“AI”) and generative artificial intelligence (“GenAI”) technology, assess its use in the legal field, and propose guidance for responsible use of AI/GenAI within the Unified Judicial System. The Committee includes jurists from all levels of court, as well as representatives from court administration, county filing offices, and the Supreme Court’s rules committees. The Committee initially focused on crafting proposed preliminary guidance for judges and personnel of the Unified Judicial System regarding the use of AI/GenAI, including permissible uses, risks, and limitations. In this effort, the Committee conducted a comparative review of AI-related initiatives, policy frameworks, and draft guidelines from other jurisdictions to inform the development of Pennsylvania’s approach. Ultimately, the Committee recommended to the Supreme Court the adoption of the “Interim Policy on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence by Judicial Officers and Court Personnel” ("Interim Policy"). On September 9, 2025, the Supreme Court adopted the Interim Policy with an effective date of December 8, 2025.
